[Thinkfinger-devel] Request for testing, support for T43p, temperature issue

Hello everyone,

some news on recent issues.

* T43p now supported.

Fabiano, please check if the current SVN or the tar ball [1] works for
you.

Chris & Ilias: This version *might* also help you guys. Please give it
a try and report if things are in better shape now.

Everyone else on the list: Please give this version a try. I had to
change quite a few bits and probably broke support for other machines.
I rely on you to make sure that this is not the case.

For testing, it is sufficient to make sure that 'tf-tool --acquire' and
'tf-tool --verify' are working properly.

* Temperature issue

Evgeni, could you please check whether this version helps with regard to
the temperature issue? I have included a small fix which might help.

Thanks,

Timo

Hi Timo -

Thank you for the quick turn around with this fix. I am now able to
swipe my finger and all of that jazz which I was unable to do before.

So far I have done an acquire and verify without any problems, I will
hook it into pam a little later in the day.

Thanks again!

Hi Timo,

hope "svn update && ./autogen.sh" was enough, too lazy to pull the
archive ;)

Seems not to, stil get 21° when idle, 23-24° after swipe and 28° after
password-login.

OK, then I will have to look what we can do about that. If you don't
mind I'll send you patches off-list to get this fixed.

Thanks,

Timo,

I did a quick check with the revision 88 (as I can see the patch is
there) and can not confirm the fix. It's still getting hot for me.

Here is a log file for you info:

Mar 1 08:14:19 ant usb 3-2: reset full speed USB device using
uhci_hcd and address 4
Mar 1 08:14:20 ant auth[17408]: pam_thinkfinger: pam_sm_authenticate
returning '9': Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication

Hm, could you define hot?
I was getting 24-25 degree after normal swipe, and about 30(!) degree
after a password-login. Now I get only 24-25 degree after both.

ok, here is my data:

Thinkpad T42
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0483:2016 SGS Thomson Microelectronics Fingerprint Reader

room temperature: 25C
su with password (after 2 min): 38C
su with swipe finger (after 1 more min): 32C

I don't have any special thermometer and was using usuall medical for
human body measure.

So 'hot' is then I can feel light burning with a front side of my wrist.

I found some infrared thermometer which showed a temperature at
approximately 38°C. With the latest revision (using the PAM module)
there was no difference whether the finger was swiped or not.

Now, what I'd love to know is whether our findings match with the
behavior when using the binary driver. If someone would volunteer to
repeat the same measurements with the binary driver I would be very
thankful.

Thanks,

Don't have my thermometer here, but just installed the binary driver

Will report more tomorrow evening, when I'm back home.

Probably because I didn't treat my scanner very nice. That was after
debugging, so I the scanner didn't like my methods of speaking with him.
Anyway, today I just get 'hand-warm' -- it's not warmer than the
left-hand side of the touchpad.

Alright, thanks for testing. That makes me feel way more comfortable.
It seems I have bad news :(
Yesterday, I tested only with my finger, now I had time to use the
digital thermometer, and the UPEK driver seems not to warm up the
scaner at all - after 2 logins with several bad-swipes I get only ~21
degree :(

Hi,

It might be relevant:
I found a problem with hibernate/suspend too. Box refuse to hibernate
or resume from suspend just hangs.
I haven't played long enough with it but it seems the problem appears
after a fingerprint reader got hot, i.e. it didn't deinit properly.
Here is a log file:

hibernate: Activating suspend ...
hibernate: Suspend reported the following errors:
- Suspend was aborted (see dmesg).
- Some devices refused to suspend (see dmesg).
---- Output from dmesg: ----
suspend_device(): usb_generic_suspend+0x0/0xe4() returns -16
Could not suspend device 3-2: error -16

Where 3-2 is my fingerprint reader.

Anton

I don't really think it's related, but it's a bug nevertheless. I'm
using ThinkFinger with both suspend to RAM and suspend to disk on a
daily basis. I never had problems. What kernel version are you
running?

Hi Timo,

I found the real problem. It is a bug in the powersave deamon.
Sorry for the false positive report.

Now, just FYI some more details about the hit problem.

bash$ su
Password or swipe finger:
(I enter password and fingerprint gets hot)
bash# hibernate-ram
(successful)
After couple minutes I resume it from suspend2 mode and the sensor remains cold.
