Hi all,
I asked UPEK about maybe offering a Linux driver for the 147e:2016
sensor and if it uses encryption, here is the reply:

To get the image from sensor-only devices, you need authentication key. We
want to prevent the possibility some customer will use our Sensor+BSP to
retrieve image and then a low performance extractor/matcher engine which
would
compromise the whole solution. We don't want any low quality product
with high
FAR/FRR to be linked with UPEK biometric sensor...
We do not have any drivers for libsane project. We also do not know the
performace of this algorithm...
